The Telecom Department has directed the telecom companies in West Bengal and Odisha to be prepared to deal with emergencies to deal with the constraints arising out of the cyclone storm. Telecom Secretary Anshu Prakash said that the telecom service providers have been asked to arrange adequate number of gensets in all the districts with sufficient diesel and stations so that any gensets can be supplied in case of any disruptions in the power supply due to the cyclone. With the help of mobile towers can be restarted.
Anshu Prakash stated that SMS alert service has been started for the people to help displacement in the affected areas. It is up to the state governments in which frequency they want to send these alerts. This is a completely free service. It will be in local language. Intra-circle roaming will continue even after the cyclone passes.
The Indian Meteorological Department has said that it is the worst cyclone after 1999. Earlier in 1999, such a severe cyclone formed in the Bay of Bengal. The department said that the speed of this cyclone in the sea is 200 to 240 km per hour. It is moving in the northwest direction.
As far as West Bengal is concerned, the maximum impact will be seen here in North and South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore districts. Wind speeds in Kolkata, Hooghly, Howrah and West Midnapore districts can range between 110-120 kmph to 135 kmph.
